Ernestine Armstrong passed away peacefully on All Saint’s Day, November 1, 2023. Ernestine was born on March 21, 1933, in Pavo, GA to Willie and Allene Hester and grew up on a farm with her three sisters Jacqueline, Frances, and Juanita. She graduated from nursing school. While in school, she met her future husband, Gary Armstrong. Ernestine became a Registered Nurse and pursued a career in the Labor, Delivery and Recovery (LDR) departments for many hospitals. Ernestine lived in various states, to include Florida, Arizona, Texas, Maryland, and resided in the countries of Turkey and Greece. Upon retirement, Ernestine and Gary settled in Lewes, Delaware.
After the family moved to Maryland in1965, Ernestine continued her career as a RN for Holy Cross and Shady Grove hospitals in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area where she delivered thousands of babies.
Ernestine was also involved in photography and was a phenomenal gardener, where her home was put on display many times due to its stunning arrangement of flowers and shrubbery. However, her true passion outside of her family was her love for her dogs.
Ernestine is survived by her five children and their spouses, Mike (Marcy), Ray (Cheryl), Michelle (Jim), Mark (Denny) and Harry (Janeen), as well as her nine grandchildren, Niles, James, Luke, Chris, Chelsey, Sara, Bill, Michael, and Garrett, and 5 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lewes, DE historical society; (historiclewes.org) or your favorite charity.
A private graveside service for Ernestine will be held Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 21619.
