January 10, 1953 – April 30, 2019
Geraldine Ann Hickie Darcy passed peacefully in her sleep on April 30, 2019, at Anne Arundel Medical Center, in Annapolis, Maryland. A native of Sydney, Australia, she moved to the United States in 1976. She is pre-deceased by her parents Mary Frances (nee O’Connell) Hickie, and Connell Francis Hickie, and a sister, Margaret Garden. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Richard, her daughter Erin, and her son Conal, as well as her siblings in Australia, James, Peter, and Catherine Hickie. In addition to being a military wife and mother, she also worked at the Maryland House of Delegates and the Maryland Senate as a legislative assistant. She was an avid swimmer, enjoyed traveling, and raised adopted cats and kittens. She loved all things British and as a good friend once said, “Geraldine always spoke posh!” She was beloved by her family, friends, and colleagues and will be sorely missed. Her life will be celebrated at a Mass of the Christian Burial at 9 AM, Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Restless Leg Foundation (rls.org), 3006 Bee Caves Road, Suite D206, Austin, Texas 78746, or the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS - barcs.org), 301 Stockholm Street Baltimore, Maryland 21230

My husband, Nick Cavarocchi, and Rick went to Lasalle college in Philadelphia Pennsylvania together and remained friends since then. I met Geraldine while she and Rick were dating and I was struck by what a great beauty she was. She had such lovely dark eyes and dark hair and a lovely figure. The first time I saw her she was wearing Ricks college sweatshirt and I said to her, "lasalle never looked so good". We both had a good laugh and we knew our friendship would be based on humor. As others have mentioned, her humor was legendary. Once she and Rick came to our home in Potomac, Maryland for dinner. I think they might have had a little tiff on the way to our home, as many of us married folks do. I commented on how good and fit they both looked. Rick said "well, you can never be too rich or too thin". And Geraldine pipped up "or too single". That broke the ice and we all laughed and had a great evening. Geraldine's ability to put people at ease with humor was a great gift to all of us. She was a great beauty, but she did not take that gift too seriously because she had so many others. She loved her husband and children with all her heart. I know she tried to stay with us for as long as she could through great cost to herself. My heart goes out to Rick,Conel, and Erin. May she Rest In Peace. Her job is done and now for the reward. Love, love bridget

Here is a Hickie family photo taken (I think) in 1969 outside our home at Bronte Beach, Sydney. The family gathering was to celebrate our brother Jim's 21st birthday. Geraldine, who was then around 16 years old, can be seen in the foreground holding her niece, Victoria...Please forgive the poor quality of the photo.

My deepest sympathy to the entire Darcy family. Geraldine was a lovely, warm and gracious person who I was privileged to work with. Her sense of humor and generosity of spirit were always appreciated. May her memory be a blessing forever.

We are so sorry to hear of Geraldine's passing. We know you both struggled with her terrible illness for so long, but the final passing is still always hard to bear. Those we love don’t go away
They walk beside us every day
Unseen, unheard but always near
Still loved, still missed, and still so dear

To Geraldine’s family:
Please accept my sincere condolences. I was so sorry to read of Geraldine’s passing. We worked together for a few years at the Maryland General Assembly, and she was the sweetest lady. I loved her sense of humor and her kindness. We had wonderful conversations about Australia, our lives as military wives, and life in general. I am happy I knew her.
Prayers for your family, Marcy Wilson

As long distance good friends of Geraldine and Rick for over 40 years we could not agree more with the sentiments expressed by Geraldine's sister Catherine. They are worth repeating. " She loved her family, she was brave, loyal, decent, kind, smart, well read and blessed with a very dry witty humour"
Hawaii appeared to be a favoured destination for Geraldine and we too will remember with fondest memories our last meeting with her there in 2013
Our love and sincerest condolences go out to Rick, Erin and Conal. From Heather and David Pym

My first vivid memory of Geraldine, my younger cousin, was when she stayed with my family whilst her mother was in hospital having her baby brother Peter. She was only about three or four at the time - a tiny, pretty, lively little girl who never stopped talking and giggling but who also constantly offered to help my mum around the house - Of course this didn’t exactly endear her to big sister Margaret or me who did our best to avoid any chores! But despite our heavy handed threats , Geraldine prevailed!
She grew into a smart, funny young woman and I looked forward to having her around but love came along and off she went to the United States. We kept in touch and a couple of times she returned home - we always picked up as if no time at all had passed.
I will miss her funny emails and her wicked sense of humour - she fought a good fight and she is now at peace. My love and condolences to Richard, Erin and Conal - you are in our thoughts. Shayne and familyxx

What can I say about my beautiful sister? I can say without any doubt that she loved her family, she was brave, loyal, decent, kind, smart, well read and blessed with a very dry, witty humour.
I will remember her and the wickedly funny times we shared travelling through the United States, UK, Europe, Australia and most recently the precious memories of time together in Hawaii in 2011.
Geraldine was a gifted writer and had the ability to not only paint a picture with her words but inject humour into the darkest of situations. An example is this email she sent to me amidst her pain and discomfort…
“I have trouble sleeping and eating because I feel as though Edward Scissorhands is chopping away at my stomach. The only things that calm me down is watching shows like Morse, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, etc. You know, inspirational stuff.”
My deepest sympathies go out to Richard, Erin and Conal.
Like a thick down blanket
warm my frozen heart.
Shut out the world
and comfort me
as I grieve my sister's loss.
Your loving sister, Catherine

In memory of my sweet little sister Geraldine (Ged) and my deep sorrow to Richard, Erin and Conal.
When we were both in Catholic boarding schools I travelled across Sydney, Australia to visit her and share a milkshake near her school. She looked so lonesome far away from home as I was. Always remember that memory and others, as we had a lot of laughs together.
Since 1976 Diane (my wife) and only saw her again and enjoyed hers and Ricks company for a week in 2007.
Will always keep her in my heart until we meet in Heaven (that's if I make it!)

I will miss Geraldine. We were friends for many years, and her dry wit and humor will certainly be missed. We didn't stay in touch once I moved to Kentucky, but she was often in my thoughts.
My deepest sympathy to Richard, Conal and Erin.
