Gloria Worthington Porter

Gloria Laraine Worthington Porter, 79, of Severna Park, Maryland, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Friday, July 3, 2026. She is now reunited with her beloved husband of 59 years, Dr. John Rogers Porter, and her father, William Lyles Worthington Sr., whom she cherished.

She is survived by her mother, Ruth Hahn Worthington, and three brothers: William L. Worthington Jr. (Tish), Hilleary Offutt Worthington, and Barry Offutt Worthington. Together, John and Gloria had three children: Katherine Porter Reilly (Daniel), Roger W. Porter (Jennifer), and Bryant F. Porter (Jessica). They also had seven beloved grandchildren: Daniel Reilly, John Patrick Reilly, William Porter, Ryan Porter, Casey Porter, Elizabeth Porter, and Jamison Porter. Additionally, she is survived by her nephew William L. Worthington III, her sister-in-law, Nancy V. Dougherty, her nephew John E. Dougherty, as well as her many friends and extended family members.

Gloria was born on October 10, 1946, in Washington, D.C., where she spent her early years before being raised in Wheaton, MD. As a child, she enjoyed roller skating, listening to records, and planning school dances. Her experience helping to care for her three younger brothers helped shape the devoted mother, sister, and friend she became. She graduated from Wheaton High School in 1964, and then studied at The Gardner School of Business in Silver Spring, MD.

She met the love of her life at Brooke Manor Country Club in Olney, MD, where John was a lifeguard. In 1966, they were married at Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Washington, D.C., and for a brief time, they lived in Laurel, MD. Gloria began her early years of employment at Westvaco Corporation; afterward, she served as the co-owner/operator of G&J Car Wash, and later as the office manager and receptionist at John’s growing orthodontic practice, John R. Porter, DDS. She eventually moved on to her most important full-time roles: mother and homemaker.

After a few short years in Norfolk and Baltimore, John and Gloria settled in Severna Park, where they raised three children. As longtime members of Chartwell Country Club, they made lifelong friends. With their friends and family, they spent weekends sailing and motor boating in the Chesapeake Bay. Gloria had a lifelong appreciation for genealogy and family history, antiques, interior design, gardening, and bird watching. She excelled at a variety of crafts, including sewing and creating custom baby quilts for each grandchild. She created the most beautiful wreaths, often gifting them to family, friends, and neighbors. She found joy in meticulously decorating for every holiday. Christmas was her particular favorite, where she demonstrated her skill of always finding the perfect gift, wrapped to perfection. Her interests reflected a deep regard for heritage, beauty, craftsmanship, and meaningful details.

Gloria enjoyed a lifetime of long, peaceful summers on Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire with her beloved John and family. She loved to spend time on the dock at the family home on Blodgett’s Landing, talking with friends and neighbors. The lively summer cottage became the perfect backdrop for her time with seven grandchildren. She had no greater joy than cuddling one of her grandchildren, especially the babies of the group. Inevitably, she could always be spotted with a tear in her eye when someone was leaving after a visit to the lake. In her role as Granny, she proudly watched her grandchildren grow and, over the years, tried to attend as many of their games, school plays, and Grandparents’ Days as she was able. She made each grandchild feel special through her quiet, gentle demeanor and deep curiosity about their evolving lives.

Gloria will be remembered for her beautiful blue eyes, friendly smile, gracious manner, elegance, meticulous care, creativity, and deep devotion to her family. She took great pride in creating a warm and welcoming home and in preserving family traditions. Her selfless dedication to her family and her joy in celebrating every milestone and holiday will live on in all who loved her. We were fortunate to have her in our lives and lucky to receive her endless love and support. She was the heart of our family and will be missed by all.

The family will receive friends from 11:00-11:30 a.m., with a memorial service to begin at 11:30 a.m. on August 10, 2026, at John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis, Maryland. There will be a reception immediately following the service. If attending, please feel free to wear blue or light blue in honor of Gloria’s favorite color.
