Dr. Gustavo Delgado, born on November 8, 1921, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on July 23, 2021. Gus was born the fifth of seven siblings in the small town of Barichara in the mountains of central Colombia. After graduating from medical school at the National University in Bogota, he came to the U.S. for specialized training in anesthesiology at Case Western University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Lahey Clinic in Boston. He returned to Colombia and founded the National Association of Anesthesiologists, working to establish the specialty in its early days, set appropriate standards, and ensure that young doctors and medical students had the training and help they needed. Gus returned to the U.S. and met and became life-long friends with Dr. Jack Lyons, joining him in practicing anesthesia at Anne Arundel General Hospital in downtown Annapolis. He practiced there for the next thirty years and was loved by all his patients and co-workers for his gentle, kind, and humble personality.
Gus fell in love with the town of Annapolis, and in 1958 he made his home in the community of Winchester on the Severn, where he lived for 59 years. He had many wonderful friends and neighbors there. Gus helped raise countless nieces and nephews from Colombia who came to the U.S. to live and study. Gus was an avid reader; enjoyed traveling, swimming, spending time at the ocean in Bethany Beach, and dabbling in photography in his very own darkroom. He was a life-long learner and in his later years he embraced learning computer skills and taking classes at the Community College. After his retirement, Gus was fortunate to continue traveling all over the world with his wife, Carmen. Gus was loved by everyone and touched so many people during his long life.
He will be missed deeply by his entire family, including sister Carmen of Bogota, Colombia, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family in the U.S., Colombia, and around the globe. He is survived by his loving wife Carmen, his 6 children, David (Gina), Richard (Irene), Carmen Chalek (Matt), Gustavo Jr. (Giuditta), Malena Ruland (John), Susan Gunlicks Delgado (Lars), as well as 15 grandchildren; Richard Jr., Danny, Kristine, Danielle, Michelle, Jamie, Katie, Patrick, Adam, Jason, Giacomo, Luca, Dante, Olin, Sabina, and 4 great grandchildren, Graham, Carson, Austin, and Ruby.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Anne Arundel Medical Center Foundation. A service will be held Wednesday, August 11, 10:30 am, at St. Mary's Church (109 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis). Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life following the service.
