Harris Havard, 92, of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away at his home on September 24, 2018. The son of David Morton and Verna James Havard, Harris was raised in West Pittston, Pennsylvania and earned a degree in Accounting from Wilkes College after serving in the Navy during World War II. In 1950, he married his high school sweetheart Mary Louise Joyce at “The Little Church Around The Corner” in the shadow of the Empire State Building in New York City. That same year, Harris and Mary moved to Washington D.C. and Harris joined the Joseph E. Jones Mutual of Omaha Insurance Agency, where he worked for over 40 years, serving as the agency’s Comptroller and becoming Mr. and Mrs. Jones’ most trusted employee and dear friend. In 1992, Harris and Mary moved to Annapolis, realizing their dream of living on the water. For the past 18 years, Harris served as Chairman of the Board of the Joseph E. and Marjorie B. Jones Foundation which supports non-profit charities in the D.C. Metro area providing services to those in need.
Harris is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary who passed away in 2013, and is survived by his daughter Joyce of Annapolis, MD, son David (and wife Sherry Bell) of Buxton and Windsor, NC, son Donald (and wife Joy) of Crofton, MD, and daughter Stephanie of Annapolis, MD. Harris was the proud and loving grandfather to David Jr., Kyle, Justin, Jamie, Calvin, Haley, and Conor. He will be celebrated in a private service and laid to rest in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
