Henry “Mickey” Meneely, 81, of Annapolis, Maryland died July 19, 2023 following a brief battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family.
Mr. Meneely was born in Port Washington, New York to Henry Tucker Meneely, Sr. and Elizabeth Schofield Meneely, and he lived his early years in Essex, Connecticut. The family moved to Annapolis in the early 1950s, where Mickey pursued his family’s passion for boating by teaching himself to sail on Lake Ogleton in Bay Ridge. Henry attended Eastport Elementary School and Annapolis High School (now Maryland Hall). He earned his high school diploma from Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1963 from Amherst College.
After college graduation Mickey enlisted in Officer Candidate School for the US Coast Guard. Following his active duty in the Coast Guard he worked his way through law school as a banker in Baltimore. He earned the degree of Juris Doctor from University of Baltimore School of Law in 1973 and practiced law in Annapolis for many years. In 1984 Mickey became a member of the US Coast Guard Reserves, spending one weekend a month in the active reserves for over 8 years achieving the rank of Commander.
In 1978 he married his beautiful and loving wife, Pat, at St. Mary’s Church in Annapolis followed by a small reception at their home in Bay Ridge. Mickey and Pat have opened their home to midshipmen, foreign exchange students, family and friends, and numerous shelter dogs.
Mickey remained actively involved in his community serving as president of the Bay Ridge Civic Association. He served as president of the Annapolis Civitan Club and was treasurer for a period of 10 years. An avid sailor Mickey was the first head instructor at the then-newly formed Severn Sailing Association and was the national champion when he raced international 14s in college. Mickey was also a member of the Corinthian sailing group for many years and sailed with them from Southern England through the Channel Islands to Saint-Malo in France. He and Pat enjoyed many nautical adventures including sailing the Great Loop in 2004-2005 and the Little Triangle through Canada.
In addition to boating Mickey earned his flight certifications and jointly owned a small Sundowner plane. He also purchased an RV and enjoyed traveling to Canada and state parks along the east coast with Pat. He loved working on his boat and car engines and could fix almost anything.
Mickey is survived by his wife of 45 years, Patricia Conway Meneely; his brothers John and Richard Meneely, and his sister Jane Meneely; and eleven nieces and nephews and their families.
