Jim was born in Yonkers, New York to William C. and Helen (Lennon) Anderson on October 22, 1923. He graduated from Mamaroneck High School and accepted an appointment to the United States Naval Academy (USNA), graduating with the Class of 1947. He married Anne Berger in 1948 and they were happily married for 71 years. They spent their lives traveling the country to numerous duty stations.
Jim served as a surface line officer during his naval career. During the Korean War, he was Executive Officer of a minesweeper. He had four commands: LSMR 32, USS Stribling, USS Observation Island, and a destroyer squadron. He ended his naval career as a Division Director at the USNA, retiring in 1976. He continued working in the private sector for the next 10 years.
He was predeceased by his brother, William C. Jr. of Evans City, PA, his daughter, Nancy A. Gordon of Annapolis, and his son-in-law, William S. Coppedge of Annapolis.
He is survived by his wife and three daughters: Dorothy Bahr (Casey) of Lewes, DE, Jeanne Coppedge of Annapolis, and Kimberly Diana (Dino) of Fairfax Station, VA; six grandchildren: Erin Hoganson (Chris), Kelly Coppedge, Lisa Diana, Nikki Diana, Kristina Diana, Steven Diana; two great grandchildren: Connor Hoganson and Shelby Hoganson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at 10:30 a.m.at the USNA St. Andrews Chapel. An inurnment will follow at the columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim’s name to the Ginger Cove Foundation 4000 River Crescent Drive Annapolis, MD 21401 or the U. S.
