OBITUARY

James "Gary" Arrington

March 23, 1943January 3, 2019

James “Gary” Arrington of Annapolis Maryland, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2019. Unusually healthy for most of his life, he suffered for more than a year from several health issues.

He was born 76 years ago in New Orleans, Louisiana but grew up in Houston, Texas. In his younger days he was a competitive roller skater and stayed in the roller skating business, managing skating rinks in several Texas cities. In the mid 80’s he went to work for the Internal Revenue Service in Austin,Texas.

In 1990, IRS gave him the opportunity to move to Washington DC to test computer programs. He enjoyed running through our nation’s capital, even becoming a marathon runner and the neighborhood representative to the Civic Association of Georgetown.

In 1998 he and wife, Diana Dunaway, purchased a waterfront home on the Magothy River in Annapolis, MD. As a sailor, Gary became an officer in the Cape Saint Claire Yacht Club (CSCYC), participated in area races and loved walking down the beach and through the neighborhood with his Shitzus, Charlie and Jason.

His home was a popular gathering place. As a joke someone listed the house on Google Maps as the CSCYC club house. Diana and Gary enjoyed hosting the annual Spring Solstice, sock burning party, which coincided with his birthday. His group pictures were always appreciated.

In addition to sailing, Gary did volunteer work at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He loved traveling and photography became a hobby. His beautiful pictures inspired many of his wife’s fiber art and oil paintings. He learned to cook and mastered fried chicken and steak. He even won the chili cook-off one year. Gary retired after 25 years from the IRS and was constantly amazed and grateful for the life he enjoyed.

Gary is survived by a loving family, his wife of more than 20 years, Diana Dunaway; his sons and daughter-in-laws, James Alexander Arrington and Miranda and John Edward Arrington and Mireya; and by his grandsons, Joseph and Gabriel; his sister-in-law, Karen Brachman; and his first wife, Janie O. Luna. Diana is not alone in saying that he was one of the nicest men she has ever known. He will be missed.

A Celebration of Life party will be held on March 23, 2019 (location and time are to be determined)

Sailing with Dad. He showed me how to steer the boat and even let me give it a try. Diana served us drinks and snacks. It was a beautiful day out on the water. Thanks Dad for making that happen.

Finally convinced Dad to let me drive is Miata. I don't think those cars were intended for someone like me.
