Jim was born in the early years of the great depression.  I came along 14 years later in 1944. My earliest memories of him were when I was 4 to 5 years old. I had a pair of cap pistols and I remember him standing on our rear porch at our house on West 115th Street in Cleveland while I declared that I was “two-gun Pete with squeaky feet.”  He was already attending Annapolis and must have been home for a visit. Other memories of the same time include warnings from my Mom against going into the backyard garage because there was a pit in the garage that our Dad had dug, probably about the time Jim was born, so that he could work on cars as a source of income during the depression when he didn’t have a job. At the time of these memories, our Dad had moved on to regular employment and no more cars were being repaired but the pit remained. 
I have no other memories of Jim until I was 12 when Kate and I visited him in Belleville Illinois. From that visit, I remember a pear fight in the yard, which I was lucky to survive and I recall falling really ill with my first and only bought of flu, which Nan nursed me through.  After that, the next memories are of a summer long visit to Albuquerque when I was 14. Jim was on TDY at Salt Lake and Nan was pregnant with Pete so I was there to cover the gap between when she needed to go to the hospital and when someone older could take over. That was an important period of time for me and I have many grateful memories of experiences and lessons learned from that visit.
There have been short visits over the years but only phone calls after our mother died.  Still, I came away from each visit with something positive and supportive.  Jim knew what he thought and always talked straight with I believe the best intentions. I’m sorry that his last year was a difficult one but I am glad to know that he had the support and attention of his loving children and friends.



The year I was born, Jim turned 17 in September.  By the next June, he had left for the Naval Academy, so I didn't really get to know him until I was older.  I remember his bringing his sweetheart, Nan, home to meet us; whom he married when he graduated.  
When I was about 6, he brought his first child, Colleen, along and I became an aunt. 
While Jim, Nan and the growing family were living in Annandale, my Mom drove the three of us girls to visit many times.  One time when I was about 12, I got a nasty cold just as we arrived there.  Jim said he would take care of that.  He proceeded to make me a "hot toddy" (his own recipe) before bed and instructed me to drink it all.  It was in a HUGE mug and loaded with Bourbon.  I thought I was going to throw it all up, but he stood over me till I finished.  The next morning, there was no sign of the cold.  I was very impressed (but never touched bourbon for about 20 years).

We continued to visit in Annapolis over the years for graduations, weddings and just to visit.  Loved being there.

I am glad I had the chance to visit with Jim by phone regularly over the last five years.  I talked to him just before Thanksgiving, and he told me "it was time".  I'd been praying for him every day for years, and am glad he was able to go quickly.  Jim and Nan are together again and nothing can separate them now.
