John was born in Statesville, North Carolina on June 23, 1933 to Reverend John K. Fleming Sr. and Retha Flowers Fleming.
John graduated with a B.A. in History and Political Science at Shepherd College and later recieved his M.A. in History at West Virginia University.
John began his teaching career at White Sulphur Springs, WV where he met his wife. He then moved to Anne Arundel County and taught at Marley Middle, then Andover H.S. and North County H.S. During his tenure as a teacher, he also was an administrator for Summer School for many years. His teaching career spanned over 37 years.
John served on numerous committees at First Presbyterian Church, as well as serving as an Elder and Deacon during his decades as a member there. John enjoyed playing golf, watching old movies, playing on the church softball league and reading. One of his favorite activities was to sing in the church choir as well as the AA Retired School Personnel Association Choir.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley, two daughters Laura Austin and Margaret Schaffner and their husbands, 6 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. on Tuesday, April 24 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM. A Funeral Service will be at 11 am, on Wednesday, April 25, at First Presbyterian Church, 171 Duke of Gloucester St. Annapolis, MD 21401. A reception will follow immediately in the church fellowship hall. Burial to follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, MD at 2 PM.
Memorial donations in memory of John can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis or the Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
