Joseph “Joe” Anthony Sullivan, 67, of West River, Maryland, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2021, following a lengthy illness and hospital stay. His best friend described him as having lived one of the most enviable lives you could have. Not because he was rich or famous, but because he embraced every moment of his time on this planet. Joe bent over backwards to make sure you were ok, making his house a revolving door of family and friends who knew they could find him manning the grill while everyone else socialized, while also making sure everyone’s drink was full. He was the dad who welcomed all the neighborhood kids to swim in his pool, always making sure there was plenty of ice cream and snacks on hand. He rarely missed an opportunity to take sports photos at his sons’ games and was eager to share these pictures with all the team members to enjoy. It’s easy to say, “What can I do?” Joe said, “I’m coming over.” He never said no to a friend. With a braggable vinyl record collection and audio equipment to match, Joe was always happy to spend an evening with friends sharing his love of music. He enjoyed travelling with his family and friends and was always on the lookout for the latest and greatest gadget for his home, office and automobile. Joe’s life was truly a life well lived.
Joe was born June 14, 1954, in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the oldest of four children. Work brought him back to the Washington, DC, area where he met and married the love of his life, Crystal Sullivan. Together they built their life and raised the other loves of Joe’s life, sons Ryan Joseph Sullivan (Alex) and Sean Patrick Sullivan (Brenna). In addition to his loving wife and sons, Joe is survived by his siblings Scott Sullivan (Beth) of Pittsburgh, PA, Kathy Naleppa of Pittsburgh, PA, and Michael “Freddie” Sullivan (Joan) of Cape May Courthouse, NJ. He is also survived by cherished in-laws, “out-laws”, and nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents, Geraldine and Maynard “Sully” Sullivan.
Joe spent his career in Construction Management, developing projects for Safeway, Ruby Tuesday, and Dunkin Donuts to name a few. Most recently, he truly loved his current position with Volta Industries, Inc, overseeing the installation of electric vehicle charging stations and could often be found extolling the benefits of owning an electric car.
Joe’s dearest friends, Bob and Denise Moltz described him as a “legend” saying that to be a true legend you must have an awesome life, only to be cut short. Joe surely lived an awesome life. He will be missed dearly, and in true legendary status, we will be talking about the good times shared with our husband, father, family member and friend for years to come.
A memorial service is not planned at this time. In keeping with the life Joe lived, a backyard poolside barbeque is planned for a date yet to be determined.
