Kathryn Cummings, 79, of Arnold, Maryland died on February 12, 2021. Kathy was born on January 15, 1942 to Thomas and Elizabeth (nee Johnson) McAndrew. Kathy was preceded by her son Thomas and her brother Tom. She is survived by John, her husband of 54 years, her children John Cummings of Gaithersburg, MD, Rebecca Thompson and her husband Bob, grandson Daniel of Summit Point, WV and a nephew Thomas McAndrew of New York City.

In her early education she attended St. Johns High School in Pittston, PA. Kathy furthered her education by earning her RN certification at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Scranton. She earned her BS in Nursing Education at College Misericordia in Dallas, PA by having a work scholarship which required/allowed her to serve as school nurse at the College. Kathy earned a Master’s degree in Sacred Theology from 1980 to 1984 at Saint Mary’s Seminary and University in Roland Park, MD.

She was technically enrolled in St Mary's Seminary's Ecumenical Institute (which held classes only in evenings). Because she did not drive, the Seminary allowed her to attend day classes with the seminarians and was the only non-clerical individual granted that extraordinary privilege . She took the Number 14 bus from the nearby community college to the Seminary twice each week for four years. In 1986 she became Director of Religious Education at St Mary's Parish in Annapolis. She always considered her role there as her mission rather than her job. She had high regard and affection for the many volunteers with whom she worked in the Sunday School and Adult Education programs. Kathy retired in 2001 when her grandson Daniel was born.

The family will receive visitors at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home 147 Duke of Gloucester Street Annapolis, MD 21401 on Tuesday February 16 from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Kathy’s name to the Religious Education Program at Saint Mary’s Church 109 Duke of Gloucester Street Annapolis, MD 21401 will be appreciated.

I first met Kathy when my son Sean was in her 2nd grade CCD class. He was so crazy about her which prompted our family to get to know and love her as he did. I can hear her laughter as I write this little note - how I will miss her sweet smile and the tilt of her head as she spoke - the world is simply not quite as wonderful without her in it with us. She was steadfast in her faith and in her life that faith sustained her. She left a legacy of love and faith which inspires us though she is gone. I will miss her forever but in that grief, I am so grateful for the time she was with us. And now she is at peace.

Dear John and Cummings family,
We are keeping you in our prayers and rosaries as we reflect on a life so well lived. Kathy was a gentle spirit who modeled faith, love and charity everyday. Teaching CCD with her at the helm was pure joy! She positively influenced the lives of hundreds of children and many educators. Yet, she always remained humble.
John, you have been the model of love and devotion as you have travelled life’s journey together. May God who sees all bless you and your family in abundance for teaching us about true love and commitment.
Sending love and prayers for peace, The Sullivan Family

Kathy was one of the most effective disciples of
Christ that I ever met. She was also such a real friend. You knew that she really listened and cared for you. She also made me laugh.
May she rest in peace now.

When Kathy's Office of Religious Education was located in the primary school building, I would see her often as she worked with the school's Sacramental Program. She was the kindest, most calm, patient, caring person who always had a gentle smile. She would pray for your concerns you brought to her. I remember that John was always there helping her in all her parish work. Thank you, Kathy, for your beautiful Christ-like witness you gave me. With deepest sympathy to your dear family, Margaret

Mrs. Cummings was my CCD teacher at St Mary’s in 2nd grade (1979/1980) and I always remember her kindness and gentle manner with us as we prepared for the sacrament of Communion. A beautiful person and St Mary’s was so fortunate to have her!

John, John, and Becca:

I have known Kathy since 1979 when we were both 2nd grade CCD teachers at St. Mary's. She became my "go-to" Saint on Earth. Now she will be my "forever" Saint in heaven.

Thinking of you during this difficult time.
