I was truly saddened to learn of Kevin's passing when I received my GRAA Newsletter in the mail yesterday. I worked with Kevin for several years while I was in the Space Network Project at GSFC before I retired in 2007. He was always willing to stop whatever he was doing to help me get whatever paperwork was needed and help me understand the world of contracts. I offer my condolences to his family and to his colleagues.

I was truly saddened to hear of Kevin's passing. He was such a kind person. I was lucky to have worked with him for a short while before I retired from NASA Goddard. Praying for his family's strength during this difficult time.

Words fail to express the sadness we felt when we learned of Kevin's passing. Kevin was a one-of-a-kind guy...always there to listen, with a story, a laugh and a beer! He truly made the world a better place and will be missed by many. Our thoughts are with you and hope the wonderful times you shared with Kevin will help you through this difficult time.

Kevin was one of the first people I met during Happy Camper field safety training at McMurdo in December 2010. A group of us were drawn to Kevin's sense of humor... he reminded me of being back home in New York with my family. Following our friendship at McMurdo, I was impressed again and again by how intentional Kevin was about bringing people together and keeping in touch what a unique quality in a world that is seemingly less and less connected. I attended two of Kevin and Ruth's Houseapalooza parties and will never forget the generosity I experienced there. Kevin surrounded himself with some of the truest people on this Earth and I am very grateful to have met him and some of his friends and family. I feel a great sense of loss hearing of Kevin's passing. My sincerest condolences to Kevin's family and all who had the good fortune of knowing him.

When someone passes so suddenly, and too soon, it's common to view it as something was taken from us. So it sometimes helps to focus more on what that person has given to us. Kevin while often tough and gruff at first, was truly a teddy bear and softie at heart. It was in channeling these contradictions and focusing on his life well lived that we came up with these life lessons.

12 Life Lessons From Kevin McCarthy -- April 2016

-Care deeply about the work, but care more about the people you work with.

-Befriend your coworkers. They'll understand well what you go through at work.

-Find the love of your life at work. You'll understand REALLY well what they go through at work.

-Why just be witty when you're so good at dry wit!

-Take time to give time. -- Volunteer.

-Read, and share what you've read.

-Put yourself out there! Be in a play, play a sport, sport a beard now and then.

-If you get the chance to go to Antarctica GO!

-Putting people in for awards is extremely rewarding.

-Show your kids you care by showing them the way.

-Love animals, they unconditionally love you.

-Finally, When life gives you lemons you should make lemonadethen try to find some people whose life is giving them vodka and have a Housapalooza House Party.

Kevin McCarthy, we will carry your lessons with us. You will be greatly missed.

Our deepest condolences to Kevin's family and friends! He is dearly missed! I was privileged to meet and work with Kevin on NASA's McMurdo Ground Station Depot Level Maintenance project and have enjoyed our friendship ever since. I always looked forward to sharing a dinner with him and catching up whenever I was in D.C. I will always be impressed with Kevin's loyalty and dedication to his team. These past few days I've been reading through our past emails and particularly smiling at his plans to provide us with a team celebration party at McMurdo after the highly successful completion of the MG1 DLM. Of special note, is Kevin's graciousness in taking his personal time on station to meet with our son to encourage and share the NASA opportunities and importance for Chris to return to college and complete his engineering degree - something Chris is in the process of wrapping up in a couple more semesters. I know that Kevin's talk was a positive influence on Chris. For that we will always be grateful. David and Nancy

God speed and a following sea my friend - we enjoyed many good times together

"Twilight and evening bell
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark

For tho' bourn out of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar"

Kevin was such a thoughtful and generous person. He had a daily presence in our office. He cared deeply for people and for doing "the right thing." He had such a kind heart and was always thinking of others. Ruth and family, you have my very deepest condolences. I am so sorry for your loss. Kevin will be missed by many.
