Mrs. Bird, who lived in Galesville, Maryland, was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on June 27, 1929. She grew up and attended public schools in Lutherville and Forestville, Maryland. She graduated from the University of Maryland in 1950 and was a lifelong Terps fan.
Mrs. Bird was a Charter Member of Christ United Methodist Church in Landover Hills, Maryland. More recently, she was an active member of Galesville United Methodist Church. She was a substitute teacher for many years and became an instructional aide in the Prince Georges County Schools from 1972 to 1991. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed sewing, gardening and picking crabs with her family and friends.
Her husband of 66 years, William L. Bird, Sr. preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister Sara Jane Joseph of Springfield, Virginia and four children: William Lawrence Bird, Jr. (Mary) of Tucson, Arizona; Janice Bird (Scott Eden) of Edgewater, Maryland; Mark Bird (Susie) of Annapolis, Maryland; and Jeanette Curry (Matt) of Catonsville, Maryland. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Suzanne, William, Daniel, Katherine, Andrew, Christian, Emma, Caroline, Natalie, Molly and Billy; and eleven great-grandchildren, James, Lucy, Emily, Blakeley, Grant, Shay, Vann, Louise, Paige, Magnolia and Remington.
A memorial service will be held at Noon on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at Galesville United Methodist Church at 4825 Church Lane, Galesville, Maryland 20765. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to West River Center, 5100 Chalk Point Road, West River, MD 20778 or Galesville United Methodist Church.
