Born on December 8, 1930, in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, she was the beloved daughter of the late Russell Lowel James and Ruth Virginia Knect James. Lois grew up in Nanticoke and graduated from Nanticoke High School in 1948. Following her graduation, she went on to attend business school in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where she began shaping a life marked by independence and determination.
At just 19 years old, Lois made the courageous decision to move to Washington, D.C., where she secured a position with the federal government, working with the CIA. It was during her time in D.C. that she met the love of her life, John M. Veal, Sr. The two married in 1952 and were blessed with one son, John M. Veal, Jr.
In 1959, Lois and her husband purchased a home in the Oyster Harbor community of Annapolis, Maryland. While they were part-time residents for many years, Lois became a full-time resident in 1979. She was a proud and active member of her community, particularly involved with the Oyster Harbor hospitality committee. She found joy in planning beach events and helping raise funds to support neighborhood activities.
Lois had a deep love for travel and embraced every opportunity to explore new places, especially with her husband and family. One of her favorite traditions was celebrating her birthday each year with a trip to Antigua, where she relished the sunshine and island breeze.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Veal, Sr., her son, John M. Veal, Jr., and her sister, Sally Ann Knorr.
She is survived by her loving grandchildren, Aaron (Eli) Scott, Renee (Juwann) Smith and Brian Veal; her great-grandchildren, Juwann “LJ” Smith, Coren Smith, Ivan Smith, Londyn Rose Smith and Amelia Scott; her devoted and loving daughter-in-law, Roxanne Veal; her nephew Danny Veal, and her niece, Linda Knorr and host of nieces and nephews.
Lois will be fondly remembered for her kind heart, quiet strength, and love for her family and community. Her presence was a gift, and her memory will continue to live on in all who had the honor of knowing her.
A visitation for Lois will be held Monday, August 4, 2025 from 10 to 11 AM in Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 Rowe Blvd, Annapolis, MD 21401. A funeral service will begin at 11 AM. Interment Maryland National Memorial, 13300 Baltimore Ave, Laurel, MD 20707.
