Margot J. Hamill, a longtime resident of Annapolis, MD, and longtime member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, died Monday, Sept. 1, at BayWoods Retirement Community. She was 89. Margot was born to Henrietta Alma Arends Henry and The Rev. John Taylor Henry in Youngstown Ohio. She was the oldest of 3 children, outliving both her younger brothers Robert and Paul. Family stories included her shared birthday with Mickey Mouse as a comic strip and Margaret Rose as princess of England. Visiting family in Melvin IL and Crossville TN were summer highlights. They lived in various places in Michigan including Frankfort and Kalamazoo, where Margot went to high school. She is a BSN graduate of the University of Michigan School of Nursing. She laid aside official nursing positions when she married Peter VV Hamill, University of Michigan School of Medicine, and they began their own family. Margot and Peter followed his US Public Health career to many places early on in their life together before settling in Annapolis MD. Daughter Jan was born in Ann Arbor MI. Son Peter was born in Winchester VA. Daughter Liza was born in Sitka AK, and son Bill in Tanana AK. Travels continued through Birmingham MI, Lexington KY, and then they settled in Annapolis MD in 1959. The recently founded Key School became a family focus as the school grew and changed. All four children began and graduated there, Margot taught 4th grade science and was the school nurse, and Peter was on the Board. St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, in the Circle became another focus in of her life. She began as one of the children’s choir mothers, was confirmed by Bishop Powell, and then joined the adult choir in which she sang until about 4 years before her death. She also served over the years as a vestry member, rector search committee member, Eucharistic minister, lector, as well as the Monday afternoon voice on the office telephone. Mom’s life work caring for others continued in yet another way- she was among the founding members of the Caritas Society of St. John’s College which ensured that current students could stay even when financial issues arose. She adopted the SJC community as her own. Chiefly her care was for her family, particularly her four children, and then their spouses and her grandchildren. Her family also included nieces, nephews, and her children’s friends and their families. Her home in Bay Ridge and then Whitehall Cove was a haven place for so many. Margot is survived by daughter Hannah “Liza” Hamill of Chester MD, and her two sons Jeffrey and Timothy of Ocean City MD, son Northmore W “Bill” Hamill of Falls Church VA, his wife Linda McCauley Hamill, and their children Peter of San Diego CA, Taylor (Molly), of Orlando FL, and Karen of San Diego CA, daughter January “Jan” Hamill of Bel Air MD, her husband Mark Gatza, and their children Margaret Gatza (Mike) of Brighton MA, and John Gatza (Monica) of Bel Air MD, and son Peter’s children Kellen of Edgewater MD, Carly Suterlowe (Alex) and their son Wallace of Catonsville MD, James of Annapolis MD, and Jackson of Annapolis MD.
