Mavis, born to Lawrence and Elizabeth Outlaw in Aulander, NC, grew up on a farm feeding chickens, gathering eggs, and picking cotton in the fields with the help of her 4 brothers and 1 sister. Her family farm did not have indoor plumbing or electricity and she walked to and from a one-room schoolhouse every day.

After Retirement, Mavis and husband Al purchased an Air Stream trailer and joined the local Air Stream club. For 10 years they travelled throughout the United States, site seeing and touring the most beautiful parts of the country. In their journeys they also boarded many cruises on the Queen Elizabeth II. They travelled the world together and her favorite trip they took was a month long oversees in China.
Mavis in her later years loved every opportunity to take local trips with her family. Her fondest memories were her trips to Atlantic City and MGM with her children to play her quarter and penny slot machines and to see a show.
