Paul Francis Smith was a native Annapolitan and the youngest of three children born to Walter B. Smith, Jr. and Martha A. Smith. He graduated from St. Mary's High School and also attended the University of Maryland. His military career began when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Korean War, followed by his service in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
After serving his country for 20 years as a USAF service member, Paul worked for Fortune 500 companies in both Seattle and the D.C. area. He returned to Annapolis and married Sarah R. Fails. They were Parishioners of St. Mary's, where Paul ushered for many years. Paul is remembered for his outgoing personality, love of storytelling, and love for his pets.
Paul died June 9, during the weekend after his 84th birthday, at Spa Creek Center where he had resided the past three years. Paul was preceded in death by Sarah in 2015 and his former spouse Anne C. Boterweg in 2011. He is survived by his brother, Walter B. Smith, III of Auburn, Washington, his daughters Denise Smith and Lisa Crow of Portland, Oregon, son-in-law Norm Crow, grandsons Mason and Branden Crow, and stepchildren Winnie Burson of Memphis, Tennessee and Frank Fails of San Diego, California and their families; as well as cousins in Annapolis and across the country.
Friends and family are invited to arrive at 9:00 a.m. for a memorial gathering Thursday, July 26, 2018 at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, where Paul's life will be celebrated with a service at 10:00 a.m.
