Thea Kahn Lindauer died peacefully last Thursday at Ginger Cove, just eleven days after celebrating her one hundredth birthday. Thea was born in Eisenberg, Germany in 1922, and in 1934, immigrated to the United States under the One Thousand Children program, an effort to save German children after the Nazi takeover of her native land.
Thea married Harry Lindauer, an Army officer who had served under General George Patton during World War II, and for nineteen years, she ably fulfilled the duties of an Army wife in Maryland, Japan, Georgia, and Germany. After her husband’s retirement from the military, Thea and Harry settled in Annapolis and quickly involved themselves in religious activities at the US Naval Academy, and in the arts, with the Annapolis Opera in particular. Thea’s ferocious energy and infectious enthusiasm in everything she did, distinguished her to the extent that she received a Maryland State Award for Women in the Arts, as well as local recognition in the form of the “Annie” award. Even in retired life Thea remained vital and engaged, translating Holocaust-related documents for the red Cross and teaching craftwork at Anne Arundel Community College. She was noted locally for her artistic efforts in the fields of music, art, and crafts, but her proudest accomplishment was the support that she and Harry provided to what became the Uriah P. Levy Center at USNA. In yet another of her numerous activities, Thea recounted her experiences of fleeing Germany in her 2007 book, “There Must Be an Ocean Between Us” – and relished the thought of having become a published author at the age of 85!
Thea is survived by a sister, Ruth Bauer, her children, David Lindauer, Marian Joan Gregory, and Robin Lang, as well as by eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
She will live in our hearts forever.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donation be made in Thea’s memory to the Friends of the Jewish Chapel, U.S. Naval Academy.
A Memorial service will be on September 12, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Temple Beth Shalom 1461 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd Arnold, MD 21012.
