Thomas Wickham Hurt died gracefully at home in Annapolis MD on July 15, 2018. Born July 28, 1931 in New London, CT, where his family was stationed with the Navy, Tom moved with his family to Annapolis in 1931, where he would return again and again in later years. As the son of a Naval Submarine Captain (USS Perch), Tom and his family moved extensively, traveling to Hawaii, Coronado CA and then to the Philippines and to Shanghai, and back to Annapolis. Tom spent middle school and high school years in Annapolis before moving again to Bremen, Germany. At Bremen Dependent High School, Tom was valedictorian of his senior class. He went on to postgraduate school at Institut auf Dem Rosenberg in Switzerland. Before returning to the US, Tom and his brother Jon had a private audience with Pope Pius XII at the Vatican in the Summer of 1948. Tom attended Harvard on an ROTC scholarship and was a graduate of Harvard’s Class of 1953. As an officer aboard the aircraft carrier “Midway” and then aboard the cruiser “Rochester,” Tom served in the Navy as Lieutenant.
Later, he earned an MBA at Wharton. Living in New York and then Philadelphia, Tom worked for Pan Am and then in commercial real estate. Married to Marjorie B. Robbins for 10 years in Philadelphia, he remained there until he returned to Annapolis in 1985. Tom lived a full and vibrant life, entertaining and dancing, doing the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzles, traveling (he was affectionately known as The Traveling Wilbury), engaging enthusiastically with friends and family, and adoring his beloved grandchildren. He was genuinely interested in others and freely shared his love. We will all miss his vibrant presence in our lives.
Tom is survived by his daughter Amanda Hurt Fegley, son-in-law Andrew D. Fegley, and his two grandchildren Alexander Wickham Fegley and Aurora Page Fegley (married to Alexander James Dawson Hall).
A remembrance, including dancing, will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake.
