Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Tillman was the son of Lt. Colonel Tillman Davis Johnson II and Mildred Johnson. As the son of an Army surgeon, Tillman grew up living all over the world, an experience that shaped his curiosity, appreciation for culture, and sense of adventure.
He pursued his passion for design at the University of Maryland’s School of Architecture, where he honed the skills that would define his lifelong career. Tillman went on to become a respected architect, known for his thoughtful designs and dedication to creating spaces that brought people together.
Tillman proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine, a commitment that reflected his deep sense of duty and honor. He was also an avid marathon runner, a race car enthusiast, and loved sketching drawings of the places he traveled to — capturing the beauty of the world through his artist’s eye.
Family was at the center of Tillman’s life. He was the proud father of Whitney Odenwald (Andrew) and Tillman Johnson (Ruta), and the loving grandfather of Ashlyn, Eliza, Tillman, and Merrick.
He was preceded in death by his sister Laurie Foster, his brother Thomas Johnson, and his beloved wife, Anne Johnson, with whom he shared a lifetime of love.
Those who knew Tillman will remember him for his kindness, humility, creativity, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
A celebration of Tillman’s life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to share memories and honor his remarkable legacy.
