William E. Smith, Sr. (Bill) fondly known to some as (Inks or Captain), an Annapolitan, passed away at Anne Arundel Medical Center on April 12, 2024. He was 91 years old. Bill was born in Annapolis, Maryland on July 18, 1932, to the late William & Frances Smith.
Bill enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Constuction Battallons, better known as the Navy Seabees from July 1, 1951 to July 19, 1955. His love for his country was apparent in his stories he shared as serving as a Seabee. While serving in the Navy, Bill married the love of his life, Jane L. Colburn on December 25, 1952.
Pior to his enlistment in the Navy, Bill worked on the contruction of the first Cheaspeake Bay Bridge. He would later work for Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BG&E) as a Service Tech. After retirement, he took a short break and then returned to work for BG&E as a Independant Service Contractor.
Bill enjoyed fishing, crabbing, playing pool, people watching, dancing and spending time with family and friends. All that knew Bill would agree, to know him was to love him, but to have him love you was a blessing.
Bill is survived by his children, Ed (Bonnie), Laura (Rick), and Cindy (David); grandchildren, Michael, Mattew, David, Justin, Dylan, Erika, Kelly, Dennis and Christopher; and nineteen great-grandchildren. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jane L. Smith, and two grandchildren, Adam Smith and Dustin Smith.
Visitation will be held at John M Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, MD 21401 on Sunday, April 21, 2024 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Celebration of life will be held, April 22, 2024 in the Chapel of John Taylor Funeral home followed by interment at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
