Jack Duane Walters

He was born May 5, 1933, in Kankakee, Illinois, a son of the late Delbert L. Gilbert, step-father, Ralph L. Walters, mother, Jeannette Dobson, and brother to late sister, Dorris Jean Gilbert.

Jack served his country in the United States Army Special Forces during the Korean War. Following his service, Jack returned to Illinois before heading West to Phoenix, Arizona, and Southern California where he worked various jobs throughout his life as an apartment complex manager and maintenance technician, auto mechanic, and an engineer.

His true passion was racing. He designed, built, and raced many open-cockpit style race cars well into his 60s. A snazzy dresser, Jack was quick-witted, loved a good joke, enjoyed socializing with friends, dancing, and watching any race, or movie about racing, that he could find. Christmas was his favorite holiday, and in his mid-years you could find him dressed as Santa Claus at his incredibly decorated home, entertaining families and children of the neighborhood.

Known surviving family: Jack is survived by his oldest children with late wife, Joan Price: Gilbert Walters Sr. and Justina Walters. Grandchildren: Gilbert Walters Jr., James Walters, Nancy (Matt) Sobotka. Great Grandchildren: Dylan Walters, Colton Walters, Isaac Sobotka, and Raven Sobotka. Preceded in death by his daughter, Jaylee Walters.

Jack is also survived by his youngest daughter with late wife, Eurith M. Johnson: Christina J. Walters Paradis. Grandchildren: Joseph M. A. Ortega, Antonio L. M. Ortega, Benjamin J. Burr, and Nicholas E. Burr. Great Grandchildren: Aiden J. Ortega, and Elijah C. B. Ortega. Preceded in death by great granddaughter, Athena Ortega.

He leaves behind special friends and caretakers Mary Jack, and Lynn and Stephanie Jacobs, who cared for him like family and graciously watched over Jack for many years allowing him to live a primarily independent life.
