James is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley Carroll; his daughter, Tammy Butterworth (Scott); his son, Randy Carroll (Shirley); his grandchildren, Josh Cupp (McKenzie), Steven Butterworth, Andrew Carroll, and Mana Butterworth; and his great-grandchildren, Barrett Cupp and Remy Cupp; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Mana Carroll; four brothers and three sisters.
James was the kind of man who showed up for his family, his country, and his faith. As a husband, father, and grandfather, he led with quiet strength, unwavering devotion, and hands that were never too busy to help. His service in the United States Army instilled in him a sense of duty, discipline, and perseverance that remained with him throughout his life. He was a faithful member of Wayside Baptist Church, where his gentle spirit, humble nature, and steadfast faith left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
James found joy in simple things and in working with his hands. He loved tending his garden, repairing lawn mowers and small engines, and creating beautiful woodworking projects. Whether fixing something that was broken, building something from scratch, or helping a friend or neighbor in need, he took pride in doing things the right way and leaving them better than he found them.
Whether offering a helping hand, sharing wisdom through example, or simply being present when he was needed most, James demonstrated a life of integrity and love. The world feels a little less anchored without him, but the values he lived by and the family he cherished will continue to carry his legacy forward for generations to come.
A memorial service to honor James will be announced at a later date.
