James C. Sproull IV, a devoted life partner, son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and community champion, peacefully passed away on October 21, 2026, into the loving arms of God. Born on September 26, 1948, in Anniston, Alabama, to H. Miller Sproull and Barbara Vaden Sproull.
Jim is survived by his lifelong partner of 23 years, Jana Payton, his daughter, Drayton A. Sproull (Dr. TerriAnn Brogan), sons, James C. Sproull V (Vanessa) and Paschal Trippe Sproull (Shauna), his grandchildren, Lucie Cruz (Gio), Jackson Sproull, Emma Sproull, Camper Sproull, Margot Sproull, and great-grandson, Luka Cruz; his siblings Hunt (Susan) Sproull, Barbara (Gary) Snow, Eva Sproull Andrews, Miller (Joy) Sproull and many loving nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Sara Choquette, his granddaughter, Reagan Sproull and his nephew, Mills Sproull.
Jim was a proud member of the Order of the Arrow as a child. He graduated from Darlington School in Rome, Georgia, in 1967. His passion for architectural design led him to study at Auburn University, where he applied his knowledge throughout his life by designing all but one of the unique homes he lived in. Jim’s unwavering commitment to his country was evident in his enlistment in the National Guard in 1967. He served with distinction and retired in 2008 as a Colonel. A staunch advocate for civic duty, he was always eager to inspire new recruits to serve their nation.
Following his time at Auburn, Jim embarked on a successful career as a stockbroker at AG Edwards, where he developed a lifelong passion for stock market investing. He skillfully managed and expanded the Sproull family funds, a legacy initiated by his parents for future generations.
In 1977, Jim combined his military expertise and financial acumen to establish Super Trooper LLC, a full-service provider of military custom uniforms and medals. His dedication and hard work were instrumental in the company’s success until his retirement in 2014. Jim’s business acumen led him to join several close friends in a venture which owned and developed land in Anniston and its surrounding areas. Their efforts resulted in the establishment of Walmart in Lenlock among many. Years later, Jim played a crucial role in the development of the Buckhorn Community in Weaver, AL. In 2014, after a miraculous recovery from a disabling surgery, Jim reinvented himself with a newfound perspective on life with God as his driving force. He committed himself to living life to the fullest each day with his family and friends. Those who knew Jim knew his love was unconditional, unwavering, supportive, and nonjudgmental. He persevered through any challenge, finding solutions even if it meant innovating something new. Jim was often referred to as a walking encyclopedia, the Google before its existence, and a true Renaissance man. If you had a question or concern on any topic, he generally had an opinion to share or knew a way to fix it. After his mother’s passing, Jim took on the role of family historian and became a great storyteller of family history and lore. In the last three years, Jim, always looking for a new project, purchased a 40 acre plot of land with a natural spring in Northern Alabama. He and Jana designed and built two structures made from the surrounding natural resources with the delegation and brawn of his wonderful extended family- Jaime and Johnny Albright, Mike Garcia, Mark Gurley and Devin Yawn Albright. Jim’s life was a testament to his love for God, family, country, and community. He was a true inspiration and one of a kind and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Visitation to be held Saturday, November 7 at St Michael’s Church and All Angels at 10 am with services to follow at 11 am in Anniston, AL.
