Margaret E Tucker

Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Parker Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Mack Amis officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 9:30 AM prior to the service at the church parlor.

“A Life Well Lived” describes Margaret. A resident of Anniston for 72 years, she had a servant’s heart. She first loved the Lord, her family and her church. She taught Sunday School at Parker Memorial for over 60 years. In 1954, Margaret raised the funds necessary to bring Alabama’s first speech therapist into the public school system. In 1956, she and Mrs. Irwin “Bunny” Boozer founded the now Opportunity Center for disabled and special needs citizens to learn a trade. In 1965, Margaret through Representative Hugh Merrill established a law requiring all newborn babies in Alabama to have a PKU blood test which determines if there is a protein deficiency, which if caught early - could prevent a type of mental retardation through a change in diet. To help those unable to afford a college education, Margaret set up two scholarships, one in her name at Huntingdon College, and the other in her husband’s name at Samford University. in 2015, Margaret was named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International. Margaret was also a member of the Algonquins and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Tucker; her parents Oscar and Marie Ennis; sister, Frances Couch; brothers, Marion Ennis and Jordan Ennis (Mary); and nephew, Steve Ennis (Sandy).

Survivors include her daughter, Marcella Tucker; nieces Marianne Joris, Patsy Wolff (William); Nephews, Marion Ennis Jr. (Barbara), Fred Couch (Sandy), Robert Couch (Mary Ann), William Couch (Edith); great nieces, Natalie York (Preston), Molly Couch, Katie Frances Banks (David), Holly Proctor (Palmer) and Shannon Everly (Mike); great nephews, Will Couch, Wes Couch (Julie), Robert Couch, Jordan Ennis (Ginger), Glenn Wolff (Katrina) and Russell McCollum (Paula).

Pallbearers will be Bob Couch, Bill Couch, Wes Couch, Robert Couch, Marion "Buddy" Ennis, Glenn Wolff and Richard Thompson, Honorary pallbearers will be Fed Couch, Will Couch, Jordan Ennis and the "Betty Everett" Sunday School Class. Special thanks to: doting friends, Richard and Kathy Thompson; caring neighbors, Scott and Augusta Andrews and Margaret's recent Home Health, Hospice and Sitter-Caregivers.
