Matthew Layton Reese

January 12, 1987April 11, 2021

Matthew Layton Reese, 34, of Anniston, Alabama passed away on Sunday at his home. Matthew was a 2005 graduate of Jacksonville High School and 2010 graduate of JSU.

He is survived by many that loved and adored him. The dash between the dates represents a life full of memories that will be cherished forever and ever by all who knew him. 01-12-1987. - 04-11-2021.

It is with profound sadness that Jeanna and I have to tell everyone that our Beloved Son, Matt lost his battle with addiction on Sunday. Matt valiantly fought and tried to beat this disease but was unable to. Our Prayer to God was that Matt would be healed and live a wonderful life here on Earth. Our Prayer always ended with “Thy will be done”. God healed Matt and freed him from the insidious bonds of addiction. Matt is cured and happy and whole. Because we believe and trust Christ our broken hearts can now be healed also. We know that we will be reunited and what a reunion that will be.

We would like to thank everyone that has prayed with us and loved us throughout this journey and ask that all our attention must now turn to helping another family facing the same situation. Matt was a sweet boy that loved deeply and cared about everyone. He truly had a Servants heart and fought injustice and stood up for ones that could not stand for themselves. He especially loved animals and cared for the forgotten that became homeless. We will hold a private family celebration of his life and find a way to honor his memory. We ask all that knew and loved Matt to please do the same. We want everyone to know that We are fine. We appreciate and covet Prayers for us but we need only that. Prayers have carried us this far and will carry us in the days forward.

in lieu of flowers we ask that you donate to an animal shelter, any Organization that benefits the homeless or any cause that is important to you.

With love and gratitude . Jeanna and Mike ❤️

I received the news today. Matt was definitely open-minded. Matt also had a sense of humor that was unreal--hardly anyone could make me laugh like he did and I got to see him laugh a lot which was great. I did see Matt within the last year or two and I told him that I had wondered how he had been and that I was excited to see him. In addition I got to meet some great people through Matt. Matt will not be forgotten.

Words cannot express how sad I am for the loss of Matt. My thoughts and love are with his family as they grieve this tremendous loss. Matt was such a genuine, funny and kind soul that we were all so lucky to have known. I will always hold him in a special place in my heart.

My heart hurts so bad for Mike ,Jeanna, Elizabeth but know this i believe with all my heart Matt is pain free and walking with angels in a place of beauty that we can only dream about a place called Heaven. One day soon we will see our son's again and for now they are surrounded by family and friends that have gone before us . And for now look for signs that Matt will be leaving you when you are feeling down he will find away to let you know he is happy and pain free and will be waiting on you in Heaven but for now just look for the signs. Love yall my brother

You are the most brilliant and intelligent person I will ever know. As I kept advancing in academia, I hoped to meet more people like you, but frankly, it never happened. This is why your loss hurts so much. You were a rarity and a true friend. I am just grateful I was able to be in the presence of your genius and had the luxury of having an intimate relationship with you. I am not the man I am today without you.

Like most artistic souls, you were too sensitive, too pure for this world. I want you to know that you did not let us down. We, humanity at large, let you down because we were not on your level. Even so, you tried your best under these circumstances. I hope you are finally at peace. I love you, brother. My condolences to Jeanna, Elizabeth, Mike, and the rest of his family.

Matt was just an awesome person and such a beautiful bright light in this world. I loved his sense of humor. He was one of the funniest guys I know and I’m really going to miss his quick wit and sarcasm. He was loved by so many and he will be missed. Sending my love and deepest condolences to his family and all of his friends. 💜
