Memorial service for Dr. Patricia J. Corbin, 60, of Jacksonville will be Friday at 2:00 at The Church of St. Michael and All Angels with Father Jon Carlisto officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-9 at Gray Brown Service Mortuary. Dr. Corbin passed away Tuesday in Gadsden.
Survivors include her sister Pamela Corbin of Port Saint Lucie, Florida.
Dr. Corbin is preceded in death by her parents Evelyn Corbin and Dr. Eustace Corbin.
Dr. Corbin was a native of Rockville Centre, NY. She was a member of St. Michaels and All Angels. She graduated Malverne High School, SUNY at Potsdam, Indiana University. Most recently Professor of Choral Music at Jacksonville State University. Dr. Patricia Corbin joined the JSU Music Department as Director of Choral Activities in the fall of 1999. A native of New York, she received a Bachelor of Music Education from the Crane School of Music, State University of New York at Potsdam, with a performance concentration in piano; a Master of Arts in Music Education from Montclair State University, Montclair, New Jersey, and the Doctor of Music in Choral Conducting from Indiana University. She has studied conducting with Brock McElheran, Joseph Flummerfelt, Robert Porco, Thomas Somerville, and Helmuth Rilling.
Prior to joining the JSU music faculty, Dr. Corbin worked as a music teacher in the Irvington Public School System in Irvington, New Jersey for 19 years. In Irvington she began teaching K-4 general music, then was transferred to teach the 5th - 8th grade Musically Gifted and Talented program that she taught for 11 years. Her last six years were spent as a high school choral director, where she directed the select Irvington High School Concert Choir, as well as the Women's Choir and Chamber Singers, which she founded.
As the Director of Choral Activities at Jacksonville State University, Dr. Corbin directs the A Cappella Choir, Chamber Singers, Calhoun County Civic Chorale, and teaches Applied Voice, Advanced Choral Conducting, Choral Literature and Class Recorder Techniques. Under her direction the JSU Choirs have performed a wide range of choral music, including large works with orchestra, such as Carmina Burana, Handel’s Messiah, Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music, and requiems by Durufle, Mozart and Brahms. The choirs have been invited to perform at State ACDA and AMEA music festivals and conferences. Dr. Corbin also co-writes and produces a Madrigal Dinner with her choirs each fall.
Dr. Corbin is a frequent presenter of sessions on choral methodology and repertoire at conferences in the United States and overseas. She has published articles on choral repertoire and techniques in the Alabama Reprise and her most recent article, “An Introduction to the Late Masses of Jan Dismas Zelenka,” was published in the ACDA Choral Journal in 2013.
Dr. Corbin served as Alabama ACDA College & Repertoire Chair from 2009-2013 and is the advisor to the JSU student ACDA Chapter. She is active as a clinician and adjudicator in Honor Choirs and choral festivals throughout the southeast. In 2010 she received the JSU Cleo and Carla Thomas Award for Outstanding Community Education & Service.
