Rev. Stewart died June 6 at his home in Anniston.
Rev. Stewart was a native of Chadron, Nebraska. He graduated from Chadron High School, Howard College (now Samford University), and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1946, had his basic training at Ft. McClellan, and completed his military service at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. He pastored churches in Alabama from 1949 to 1958, his last pastorate being the Eulaton First Baptist Church in Anniston.
In 1958, he and his wife, Maxine Ashburn Stewart, were appointed by the International Mission Board, SBC, to serve in Thailand.
They, with their three children, went to Thailand in October, 1958, and served there until their retirement in 1994. In Thailand he served as a field evangelist, church advisor, hospital chaplain, preacher, seminary teacher, writer of Thai-language books, gospel tracts, Bible study lessons, and a church newspaper. They have resided in Anniston since their retirement.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, his father, Robert E. Stewart, and his mother, Sybil Stewart Gay. Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Latham of Rome, GA, and Beverly Shelton of Anniston, one son, Robert K. Stewart, and his wife, Penny Shelton, of Athens, Ohio, a sister, Joan Stewart, of Omaha, Nebraska, a brother, Bruce Stewart, of Kearney, Nebraska, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Since his retirement from the mission field Rev. Stewart has been a member of Parker Memorial Baptist Church, and was the teacher of the BYKOTA Sunday School for several years until failing health forced him to give it up. From 2009-2017 he was the full time home caregiver for his wife, after she was stricken with dementia and several TIAs. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering c/o Parker Memorial Baptist Church.
