Funeral services for Royce W. Smith, 77 of Weaver will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 11:00 am at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary with Bro. Mike Owens officiating and delivering the sermon. Burial will follow at Anniston Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm, Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith passed away at his home on Friday, October 5, 2018, and was surrounded by his family.
Survivors include his daughter, Ginger Harrelson Stephens (Danny), his grandson, Garrett Harrelson; sisters, Carolyn Vaughn, Dale Williams, and Gay Haynes (Jerry); brothers, Doyle Smith and Dwight (Angelle) Smith.
Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Gladys Smith.
Pallbearers will be Garrett Harrelson, Danny Stephens, Adam Vaughn, Chris Williams, Patrick Haynes and Gregg Curtis.
Mr. Smith was a lifelong resident of Calhoun County. He was a graduate of the Class of 1959 at Alexandria High School. Mr. Smith proudly served his country for 6 years in the US Army. He was honorably discharged after his service in Korea in 1970. After his service, Mr. Smith worked for many years at Blue Mountain Industries and as a forklift driver at SuperValu Warehouse until he retired in 2003. He was a dedicated father and grandfather. He spent his retired life caring for his family. He was very invested in the lives of both his daughter and grandson, and always insured that they were provided for. As a father, he always made sure to care for and protect his daughter. As a grandfather, he was a strong advocate for his grandson’s education, and was a proud mentor as his grandson became an Eagle Scout. His daughter and grandson were his pride and joy, and he was always supportive of them. Mr. Smith was also a proud Baptist and regularly attended Leatherwood Baptist Church, until his illness prevented him from attending.
Mr. Smith was a man of many hobbies. He enjoyed camping, fishing, the outdoors, traveling, cruises and gardening. Other than his family his greatest passion was ballroom dancing. He was very well-versed in several different dances. He was very well-known in both his family and social circles when it came to dancing, and many people enjoyed watching him dance. Mr. Smith won many dance competitions and was highly respected for his talents. He will be dearly missed.
