Stanley English, age 96, of Oxford, Alabama, passed away on November 2, 2026. Born September 26, 1930, Stanley lived a long life marked by steady purpose, quiet courage, and a deep devotion to faith and family.
Raised in Cleburne County and a resident of Calhoun County, Stanley carried with him the values of his upbringing—meeting each season with the strength of a brave heart, the steadiness of hard work, and the kind of wisdom that is earned over time and shared without fanfare.
In the 1950’s, Stanley joined the United States Marine Corps, answering the call to serve with resolve and discipline. He later built a respected career as a Project Engineer, retiring from the Alabama DOT Road Department of Cleburne and Calhoun County. Throughout his working years, he was known for the reliability of his hands and the sound judgment of his decisions—qualities that reflected both diligence and experience.
Stanley’s greatest joys were often found close to home: loving his family, traveling, gardening, and carpentry. In each of these, his care and craftsmanship were evident, as was the faithful spirit that guided his life. He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church, where his commitment to his church family stood as a testament to enduring belief.
Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, Kathleen and Dock English; his wife, Elaine English; four siblings; and his grandchild, Shannon Barker.
He is survived by his daughters, Gleeda Alvis (Timothy), Doña Formby (Joseph), and Rebecca Young (Jacob); his grandchildren, Maranatha Puckett (Steven), Jonathan Alvis (Cassie), Joshua Alvis (Kellie), Joshua Formby (Jen), Jessica Brown, Chrissy Young, Patrina Estes (Michael), Kaitlin Thompson, and Heath Thompson; 23 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary, on November 6, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. A committal service will follow at Forestlawn Gardens, on November 6, 2026, starting at 12:30 with Chaplain Stan Albright officiating.
Active pallbearers will be Eric English, Johnny English, Jonathan Alvis, Joshua Alvis, Joshua Formby, and Heath Thompson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church building fund.
