Yvonne Alt, age 90, passed away on October 9, 2026. Born on December 31, 1935, Yvonne lived a life marked by steadfast faith, generous service, and an enduring devotion to family, learning, and community. She was a beloved presence to those who knew her—compassionate in spirit, hard-working in purpose, and quietly inspirational through the way she gave of herself to others. Yvonne was a resident of Anniston, Alabama.
Born in Louisiana to a minister/teacher father, and a loving mother who was also a teacher, Yvonne was raised in a church-centered home that also valued the steady rhythms of farm life. With three other children in the family, she learned early the meaning of responsibility, care, and commitment. Education was always important to her, and from a young age she knew she wanted to become a teacher—admiring her parents as educators and finding genuine joy in her own classes.
Yvonne attended Centenary College of Louisiana, graduating Cum Laude, and began her teaching career in Shreveport, Louisiana. Her calling to teach carried her across many communities as she continued teaching in Anniston, Alabama; New Orleans, Louisiana; Ft Lauderdale, Florida; and Montgomery, Alabama. In each place, she brought the same faithful dedication and generous heart to the work before her, offering students not only instruction, but steady encouragement and care.
When her children were grown, Yvonne was accepted as a teacher in a Department of Defense Dependents School in Keflavik, Iceland. After teaching in Iceland, she received and accepted an offer to teach in Germany. During her years in Germany, Yvonne fell in love with the wonders of Europe, embracing the opportunity with the same diligence and purpose that characterized her life and work.
In 1985, Yvonne married Frank Alt. Together they enjoyed a blissful life in Nuremberg, Germany until November 1990. Their years there reflected the depth of her devotion to home and family, and the quiet strength with which she built a life rooted in love and shared purpose.
Throughout her life, Yvonne’s faith remained central. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Anniston, Alabama, where she was involved with the PAWS program—bringing joy to nursing homes through the sharing of pets. Her compassion was evident in the simple, meaningful ways she helped others, and her generosity was often expressed through steady presence and practical care. She also found happiness in church life, gardening, family life, and taking care of her dogs.
Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Gertrude Krumnow; her husband, Frank Alt; and three siblings. She is survived by her son, Wes Black (Lisa); her daughter, Lydia Byars; her grandchildren, Jim Black, Tyler Black, Adam Byars, Hannah Byars (Dave Barry), Jacob Byars, Caleb Byars, and her great grandchildren, Parker Black, Kimber Black, Knox Black.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on October 14, 2026, at First United Methodist Church of Anniston, Noble Street, Anniston, AL.
Yvonne will be remembered with gratitude and respect—for her faithful heart, her tireless work, her generous spirit, and the lasting good she brought into the lives of others.
