Apopka after several years of illness at the age of 86.
Bill was born in Toledo, Ohio, and enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17. He met his wife, Shirley, while
stationed at Naval Air Station, Whiting Field, Milton, Florida. Bill spent the latter part of his Navy career
stationed in Jacksonville and Pensacola, Florida, and considered himself to be a true Floridian. He
retired from the Navy in 1973 with an Honorable Discharge.
After his retirement, Bill and Shirley moved to Orlando, Florida, where they raised their four children;
and he began his new career in the magnet business.
In retirement, Bill volunteered at the VFW. Visiting local veteran homes, preparing meals for steak
nights, calling bingo, preparing annual Thanksgiving meals, and making his famous chili were just a
few of the volunteering activities he enjoyed. In addition, he was Past Commander of Pine Hills Post
VFW 8152 and Past District Commander.
On June 22, 2022, Bill and Shirley celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary with their family in Mt.
Dora, Florida.
Bill enjoyed providing wisdom to and bantering with his children and grandchildren. His favorite
saying was "just shut up and listen to what I am telling you."
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters, Dorothy (Wendell), Pam (Greg) and Becky (Bob); son,
Will (Darla); grandsons, Randy, Ricky and Austin; granddaughters, Rachel, Courtney and Alyson; great
grandchildren, Jack, Madeline and Dawson; and his sister, Karlene.
Celebration of Life will be at the Winter Garden VFW on Friday, June 16th, from 12:00-2:00 pm.
