
Born June 7, 1922 in Arcata, CA passed away suddenly on November 10 at Mercy Medical Center in Redding surrounded by family. He is survived by son Bill Damgaard of McKinleyville, son and daughter-in-law Paul and Kay Damgaard of Santa Rosa, son James Skude of San Diego, daughter Karen Wilson of Rohnert Park, daughter Jan Wilson of Bellevue, WA, son Bob Wilson of Portland, OR, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wife Helen, wife Hazel, daughter Linda West, brother Francis Damgaard and sisters Beryl Nielsen and Doris Damgaard preceded him in death.
Gene will be remembered for his kind, giving and nurturing nature; he spent his life caring for his loved ones, he set an amazing example for all of us. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed golf, fishing, tennis, billiards, bowling and cards. Golf was his passion, Beau Pre golf course a second home; much of his free time was spent perfecting his game, reaching a 3 handicap at his best. Even after golf became more difficult, he spent his days at Beau Pre taking in the atmosphere and staying in touch with friends.
Family and friends were entertained with stories gained from his life experiences; his amazing sense of humor meant he was always ready with a joke or teasing remark. Gene spent his professional life driving truck, starting in the Army during World War II and finishing with Nielsen Freight Lines about 45 years later.
A celebration of Gene's life will be held Wednesday, November 23 at Ocean View Cemetery in Eureka at 1:00 pm; a reception will follow at the Moose Lodge, 1791 Sutter Road, McKinleyville from 3-5 pm.
