James Hugh Overman, Jr., passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on October 5, 1951, in Guilford County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late James Hugh Overman, Sr. and Helen Louise Burrow Overman.
James was a hardworking man who spent many years as a truck driver, a career that suited his independent spirit and love of the open road. Outside of work, he found great joy in the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Those who knew him best will remember his quick wit, contagious sense of humor, and the laughter he brought to family and friends.
James's greatest joy in life was his family. He is survived by his brothers, Bill Overman and Jeff Overman and his wife, Audrey; his sisters, Anita Prevost and her husband, Mike, and Sherri Etheridge; his nieces, Caitlin Prevost, Alex Robinson and her husband, Cody, and Alleigh Etheridge; and his nephews, Gatlin Overman, Jeremy Overman, Kenny Prevost, Noah Etheridge, and Keegan Etheridge.
Among the many people he loved, his nephew Gatlin Overman held an especially dear place in his heart. James often said that before Gatlin came into this world, his life was nothing, but Gatlin gave him a reason to keep on living and became the light of his life. Their bond was one of unconditional love and remained one of the greatest blessings of his life.
James lived by a simple but meaningful philosophy: "Make the most of what you have while you have it, because you can lose it anytime." He hoped to be remembered for his sense of humor, his love for his nieces and nephews, and the kindness he shared with those around him.
Though his presence will be deeply missed, the memories he created, the laughter he inspired, and the love he gave so freely will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
A private family gathering to celebrate James's life will be held at a later date.
