Mark Brian “Rocket Man” Metcalfe, died unexpectedly on September 19, 2025. Born on November 5, 1958, in El Paso, Texas, to Wilma Elizabeth Bowers Metcalfe and Gary Luthur Metcalfe, Mark lived a life rich with adventure, service, and sincerity.
The son of a military father, Mark spent his childhood traveling the world—an experience that shaped his broad perspective, open heart, and deep appreciation for life. He eventually put down roots in High Point, North Carolina, where he spent most of his adult life surrounded by the people and places he loved.
A graduate of Andrews High School, class of 1976, Mark began his working life at Aldridge Oil, where he built a reputation for dependability and dedication. He later pursued his passion for the open road, working as a transport driver for several NASCAR teams. He worked with some of the most respected teams in the sport, including Hagan Racing, where he contributed to Terry Labonte’s 1984 championship victory. He also played an integral role with JKS Motorsports, Bill Davis Racing, Richard Childress Racing (RCR), Track House Racing, and Silver Hare Racing. His expertise, attention to detail, and dedication to the craft earned him the respect and admiration of those who knew him in the racing community. Later, he also worked driving for Harris Teeter and working alongside his friends Charlie and Tim Martin at Jimmy’s Plumbing. He took great pride in every mile traveled and every task done right. He went 40 years without an accident.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mark was known for his deep love and devotion to his family, particularly his mother. He cared for her with unwavering tenderness, always putting her well-being first. His selflessness and generosity of spirit were evident in all aspects of his life.
Mark was a member of Gospel Baptist Church in Archdale. He was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation. Always willing to lend a hand, Mark consistently put the needs of others before his own—a true servant’s heart in every sense.
He is survived by his loving mother, Wilma Elizabeth Bowers Metcalfe, and his sister, Janice Metcalfe Watt. Also left to cherish his memory are his dearest friends Charlie and Tim Martin, Randy Overby, and David Brown—who stood by his side like brothers throughout life’s journey.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Metcalfe.
Mark’s nickname, “Rocket Man,” was more than a fun title—it reflected his boundless energy.
