

Mr. Chappell was born on August 24th, 1922 in Durham, North Carolina to the late Rufus Dempsey Chappell, Sr. and Nora Mangum Chappell. A retired member of the United States Marine Corps, Mr. Chappell was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the Battle of Guadalcanal.
Mr. Chappell was married to the late Jonsie Farlow on Christmas Day, 1946 and resided in the Sedgefield neighborhood of Greensboro where he worked as a Food Services Manager for the Sands Vending Company. He was of the Christian faith.
Mr. Chappell is survived by his son, Stephen Chappell and Diane of Chapel Hill, a daughter Ellie Welborn and Jody of Trinity, a brother Thomas Chappell and Lucille of Durham, four grandchildren, Jarred Chappell and Heather of Chapel Hill, Jonathan Chappell of Raleigh, Matthew Welborn of Trinity and Adam Welborn of Trinity. Two great-grandchildren, Eli and Addy Chappell.
Mr. Chappell spent his retired years in Asheboro with his wife, where he enjoyed his hobbies of golf, woodworking elaborate bird feeders and other crafts, and following Duke basketball.
A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Marlboro Friends Meeting Cemetery, 2668 Marlboro Road, Sophia, NC 27350.
