Terry Edward Shoaf, 80, a resident of Archdale, NC died Thursday June 26, 2025 at the Hospice of the Piedmont Hospice Home in High Point (where he was very well cared for, loved on, and made comfortable).
He was born (just minutes before his identical twin Jerry) in High Point on December 25, 1944, the son of Edward Lee and Mary Pickard Shoaf.
Terry graduated from High Point Central High School. During high school he drove a school bus. He also started his First Responder career working as an EMT driving the hearse (there were not many options for transporting patients back in that day!!) out of Davis Funeral Home, transporting patients to the hospital.
While in his early 20's, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He proudly served his country and after receiving his Honorable Discharge, he came back home a Vietnam Veteran.
He continued his life of service and became a firefighter with the City of High Point, where he worked for over 22 years before retiring. During this time he also worked for the High Point Rescue Squad with his twin brother Jerry (they may have messed with a few patients' neuro checks by seeing doubles!!).
In his spare time from chasing fires, Terry was a faithful friend to many, having never met a stranger. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in High Point and was a member of the VFW of Archdale.
After retiring from HPFD, Terry still continued to work part time as an associate with Sechrest Funeral Service. You could also find him helping out at his son’s frozen yogurt shop, or (ALWAYS) working in the yard.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Mary, his brother Larry; recently by his cousin Roger Thornton. Just 77 days before Terry's passing, he lost his “Little Brother” Jerry Shoaf.
Surviving are his wife Donna Gwynn Shoaf; his favorite son and daughter in law, Thomas Shoaf and wife Stephanie; his three "favorite daughters" Tamra Shoaf and husband Joe Jablon, Lauren St. George and husband Thomas, and Lori Harper and husband Scottie.
He also leaves behind his pride and joy, his many loved grandchildren, Olivia Shoaf, Xander Landers, Kaylee Morgan Shoaf, Kylee Jade Austin, Zach Shoaf, Logan Harper, Natalie Harper, Brinley Harper, Addy Grace St. George, Brian Scott Harper, and Isabella Lamb; his sister-in-laws Nancy “Bunny” Shoaf (Jerry), Maria Shoaf (Larry); sister and brother-in-law Dawn & Jeff Jackson and his Aunt Sarah Murphy and cousin Therill Shoaf.
All of who, including his many nieces and nephews, special friends, first responder brothers & sisters, and sweet dogs Candy & TJ, will miss him dearly. But we will also be reminded of the many many sweet and funny (and mischievous!) memories he has left us with.
Terry "Shoaf" was a son, a brother, a Marine, a Veteran. He was a loving husband and daddy and uncle; he was an adoring (and greatly adored!) Papaw. He is our hero. We love you so much Papaw.
A service to Celebrate Terry’s Life will be held at Advantage Funeral in Archdale on July 12th at 12:00 p.m. Following the service, Military Honors will be presented by the Randolph County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home directly after.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Terry’s memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (t2t.org) an organization that helps injured First Responders and Veterans.
Last Call for Firefighter Terry Shoaf.
May you rest in peace knowing your strength lives in all of us.
You are now clear of Duty.
