Charles Fun Awen MD was born on March 13, 1932, in Seoul, South Korea to Jyng Young Aw and Sung Nyu Kim. He ascended to everlasting life on April 30, 2021.
Dr. Charles Awen practiced pathology in Green Bay, WI at Bellin Health (formerly Bellin Memorial Hospital). He also practiced at Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette, WI. He graduated from Seoul National University Medical College in Seoul, South Korea. His post graduate trainings include: rotating internship at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Washington, residency in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Luke’s Hospital, Milwaukee, WI becoming eligible for the College of American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, pursuing pathology training at Milwaukee County Hospital which is affiliated with Medical College of Wisconsin (formerly Marquette University School of Medicine, Milwaukee, WI), house physician at Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, and completed pathology training at the University of Saskatchewan Medical School, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Dr. Awen served in the Korean War (1950-1953) as a staff sergeant in the Republic of Korea (ROK) Air Force.
Dr. Awen was certified in pathology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Awen was an assistant professor in pathology at Medical College of University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He also was certified in pathology by the American Board of Pathology. He was licensed in Canada by Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LLMC). He was also licensed to practice medicine in the province of Saskatchewan. Dr. Awen was licensed to practice medicine in Wisconsin by the Wisconsin Medical Board.
Dr. Awen was a past member of the medical board at Bellin Memorial Hospital as well as Bay Area Medical Center. He was also medical director of laboratories of Bellin Memorial Hospital and Bay Area Medical Center.
Dr. Awen was an active Mason and Shriner. He was the past Worshipful Master of the Pine Lodge in Oconto, WI. He was also a long-time member of the York and Scottish Rite. Dr. Awen was an active member and past potentate of the Beja Shrine. He was the captain of the guard at the Scottish Rite in Green Bay, WI. He also was past Sovereign of the Red Cross of Constantine of Green Bay, WI. He was the past director of Royal Order of Jesters of Green Bay, WI.
Dr. Awen was a past member, elder, deacon, and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Oconto, WI.
Dr. Awen is survived by his children, Thomas J (Linda Moy) Awen JD, Dennis Awen Ed.D., his grandson, William Awen; his brother, Chan Hoon (Suk Ja) Aw; his many nieces and nephews, and friends, Randy (Carol) Monette, and William (Jody) Binder JD, and many others.
There will be a memorial service in Green Bay, WI at a later date.
Dr. Awen was married to Kim Young Chung (Awen) M.D. for fifty-four years until Kim’s ascendancy to immortal life on March 9, 2017. Now they are together, at last, side by side, for all of eternity at the right hand of the Lord Almighty.
Visitation from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm, Friday, May 7, 2021, at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, Illinois where Funeral Service will be at 8:30 am, Saturday, May 8, 2021. Interment Willow Lawn Memorial Park, Vernon Hills, Illinois.
