

Chicago---Donald J. Sager, former public library director, publisher, and executive search consultant, passed away on January 1, 2015 after a long, dignified struggle with Parkinson"s disease.Growing up, Sager spent many happy hours at various branches of the Chicago Public Library, leading him to over 40 years of professional commitment to public libraries. He served as Commissioner of the Chicago Public Library (1978-1981), City Librarian and Director of the Milwaukee Public Library (1983-1991) as well as director of the public libraries in Kingston NY, Elyria OH, Mobile AL, Columbus OH, and Elmhurst IL.He was widely respected within the national library community, serving in many ways including as President of the Public Library Association and a member of Board of Trustees of the Urban Libraries Council. In 2005 he was the recipient of one of the profession"s highest honors, the Joseph W. Lippincott Award given by the American Library Association.Throughout his career he was a prolific writer and contributor to library literature. Sager authored eight books and numerous publications, articles, reviews, and book chapters as well as serving as a contributing editor for Public Libraries for 10 years.Sager also served the profession as president of Gossage Sager Associates, an executive recruitment firm specializing in library leadership positions as well as publisher and editor of Highsmith Press.Sager is survived by his beloved wife, Sarah Ann Long; sons, Geoffrey A. Sager (Lisa Lucas) and Andrew M. Sager (Mary Beth Reed); stepsons, Andrew C. Long and James A. Long; and eight grandchildren.Visitation will be held January 10, 2015 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm followed by funeral services January 11, 2015 at 2:00 pm. Both events will be held at Glueckert Funeral Home 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60004.
