Dorothy I Schmidt

September 4, 1938October 16, 2020

Dorothy Schmidt, age 82, of Arlington Heights, Illinois, born in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, to Raymond and Irene(Ruttan) Mueller, passed from this life to her heavenly home on October 16, 2020.

Dorothy was the beloved wife of 63 years to Gilbert; loving mother to Paul (Mary) Schmidt, Jacqueline(Douglas) Wadsworth, Marilyn (Sheldon) Strauch, Timothy (Vonda) Schmidt, David (Maggie) Schmidt, Karen (Michael) Vick, Mark Schmidt; proud grandmother of Monique, Joshua, Charity, Carissa, Nicholas, Isaac, Thomas(deceased), Matthew, Ryan, James, Ainsley, Morgan, Madison, Mackenzie, Gavin, and Maryn; doting great grandmother to Skylar, Josiah, Faith, and Hope.

Dorothy grew up in Monaco, Wisconsin. At age 19 she married Gilbert, who was serving in the US Army at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. Soon afterwards Gilbert was stationed in Germany and Dorothy joined him there. After returning to the USA, Dorothy and Gilbert settled in the Chicago area.

Dorothy was a self-sacrificing person who lived to serve her family, friends, and her Savior, Jesus Christ. All who knew her would attest to her compassionate heart, her generosity towards others, and her kindness. She demonstrated cheerfulness in adversity, even in her last days. Her faithful, consistent disposition endeared her to those who knew her. Proverbs 31:28 -31 says, “ Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praised her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellent them all. Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands and let her own works praise her in the gates.” Dorothy’s life demonstrated the above verses. She was devoted to her husband. Raising and caring for her family was a priority. She is greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

The quartet of sentences that start the fourth paragraph of Dorothy’s obituary above represent a fitting description of – and tribute to – her character, her personality and her testimony. She served as an example to many, a fine epitaph for an authentic and respected Christian leader.

As you walked to the rear entrance of the church on a Sunday morning, you saw her smiling face and heard her cheerful words of greeting before you ever entered the doorway, even on a cold day. Dorothy always offered a warm welcome, a genuine invitation to join the group. I envisioned her receiving a similar one at heaven’s entrance ... from Jesus Christ, with arms outstretched, repeating those famous seven words from scripture, “Well done, you good and faithful servant" ... followed by "welcome home. I’m glad you’re here.”

I have fond memories of the Schmidt family when we were members of First Baptist Church of Arlington Heights. Dottie and I worked together on committees and were partners in 1977 when we did the James Kennedy Evangelism series. I remember her and the family as being faithful and Dottie, as we called her, as always being joyful and smiling. Even with all she had to do in raising seven children, she always had time for helping with church dinners etc.
My best to the family and please be assured of my prayers.
