It is with a heavy heart that we share that Edward Charles Gerdes Sr., 83, of Arlington Heights, Illinois, born on July 11,1942, was called home to the Lord on May 23, 2026, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was the beloved husband, of 61 years, to Grace (nee Coyle) Gerdes. Loving father of Cynthia (Richard) Cummings, Edward (Lisa) Gerdes, Ginger (Scot) Baurhyte, Debbie (the late Jim) Gerdes-Grabowy, and Daniel Gerdes. Beloved son of the late Charles and Mary (nee Mruczek) Gerdes, and dear son-in-law of the late Michael and Mary (nee McCormick) Coyle.
Dear brother of Richard (Sandy) Gerdes, Maryan (Tom) Nuzzo, Debbie (the late Paul) Humphreville, Virginia (the late Rick) Kelly, and the late Charles Gerdes Jr.
Proud grandfather of Eddie, Bradley, Grant, Sean, the late baby Gunther, Konrad, Kira, Jack, Chloe, Danny, Caitlin, Jimmy, Michael, Charlie, Danielle, Grace, Devin and Kristy; and honored great-grandfather of Nolan. Fond uncle of many nieces and nephews here and abroad.
Edward was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Northlake. He attended Catholic schools growing up, which helped cement the deep roots of faith that remained central throughout his life and that he lovingly instilled in his family.
Growing up, Edward enjoyed playing cowboys with his brothers and played both baseball and basketball. His love of sports continued throughout his whole life as he coached many of his children in travel baseball, softball, and basketball. You could always find him on the sidelines or in the bleachers cheering on one of his children or grandchildren, proudly encouraging them in every stage of life. Edward enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling, cherished evenings spent at Irish dinner dances with their close friends, and hosting dinner parties with family and friends in their home. Together, they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, hospitality, and love. Family and friends were always welcomed around their table, and Edward never turned away anyone in need of help, conversation, or a drink.
He began his working life as a mailman, and he later became a lithographer, then onto a salesman at Schawk Graphics, where he spent many successful years before retiring.
Anyone who knew Edward would often describe him as “one of the nicest guys I know.” That kindness showed in the way he raised his family, treated his friends, welcomed neighbors, and cared for everyone who crossed his path. His generosity, humor, steady presence, and genuine goodness will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were blessed to know and love him.
Visitation will be Friday, May 29, 2026 from 3pm to 8pm at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. Mass will be held Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Our Lady of the Wayside Church at 11am, and then proceed to St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, 1185 West Algonquin Road, Palatine, IL.
