Born in Chicago, Edward (Ed) was drafted into the Army before finishing high school and served stateside during WWII at Fort Sill, OK. When the war ended, Ed returned to Chicago and began a career selling concrete forming supplies in the post-war construction boom, working for Superior Concrete Accessories. Ed completed his GED studies attending evening classes at Navy Pier. Ed met Virginia shortly after returning home, and they were married in 1948.
A few years later, Ed and Virginia moved to Elmwood Park, where they welcomed Matthew and Jacqueline into their lives. Shortly thereafter, the growing Sledz family moved to a home in Park Ridge, which Ed designed and built. After moving to Park Ridge, Ed began attending evening classes at Northwestern University, graduating with a degree in Business Administration. When the construction industry slowed in the mid-Seventies, Ed began a second career appraising real estate, working for Mid America Appraisal and then owning his own firm, Area Appraisal & Research.
Upon retiring, Ed and Virginia enjoyed spending time with their granddaughters. After Virginia’s passing, Ed became an active member in the Park Ridge and Des Plaines Senior Centers where he became an avid bridge player. He also joined a men’s golf group, The ROMEOS, in Niles. In his spare time, Ed was an avid reader and enjoyed music, gardening, puzzles, and model trains.
