Elaine graduated from West Essex High School in 1975. She received her Bachelor’s degree in English from Douglass College, Rutgers University in 1979. While there, she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and met her husband, John, in the Rutgers marching band. Elaine then graduated from the University of Illinois with a Master’s degree in English literature. She and John began a wonderful marriage on June 20, 1981. Elaine was incredibly involved in several organizations. As a member of Cross and Crown Lutheran Church, she was involved in youth and music ministries. She was a lay director of the Ecumenical Cursillo Community of Northern Illinois.
Elaine first became involved in Scouting as the den leader for her son’s Cub Scout den and the troop leader for her daughter’s Girl Scout troop. In Scouting, she went on to hold positions as Round Table Commissioner, District Commissioner, and Assistant Council Commissioner. Elaine participated in Woodbadge training, was a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, and was awarded the District Award of Merit and Silver Beaver Award.
She began reenacting the Civil War with Venture Crew 862 and became a crew advisor. While reenacting, Elaine presented on many topics at historic sites and conferences around the country. She and John performed popular 19th century music as the band Tin Cremona, later publishing a music book of these songs together. Elaine was on the administrative board for Blue Gray Civilian Towns, was one of the civilian coordinators for the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s funeral in Springfield, IL, and spent many happy hours researching music and history. Elaine was an avid photographer, knitter, and gardener.
Elaine is survived by her loving husband, John Masciale; beloved children, David (Julie) and Elise (Steve); treasured grandchildren, Alex, Sophie, Emily, and Levi; sister, Diane (Thomas) and brother, Glenn (Cindy). She is preceded in death by her parents.

A wake will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N Arlington Heights Rd, Arlington Heights, IL 60004. An additional wake will occur Saturday, October 11, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at The Orchard Arlington Heights, 1330 N Douglas Ave, Arlington Heights, IL 60004. A funeral service will begin on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 11:00 AM also at The Orchard Arlington Heights. Interment will take place at Memory Gardens immediately following.
