Of Lexington, Kentucky
Elwood (Woody) Hughes, formerly of Wheeling, passed away at 95 years old, and now belongs to the ages. He was born May 14, 1925, to Elwood E. and Eva Mae (nee Roberts) Hughes. He died February 2, 2021, in Lexington, Kentucky.
Woody was a WWII Marine veteran of several battles - including Iwo Jima. He was an eyewitness to the flag-raising on Mt. Siribahci that occurred 76 years ago (this month). God Speed, Woody, and Semper Fidelis!
Woody was an alumnus of Ball State University where he received his teaching degree. He then went on to teach physical education at both, Maine East and then, Maine West High School in Des Plaines. He was also a long-time varsity baseball coach for the school district.
Due to his vivacious character and his unique outgoing style, Woody was instantly likable to all who met him. He was often remembered for his smile, a story, and a gleam in his eye. Last year, Woody moved from Illinois to Kentucky to be closer to his son, Bill. However, he stayed in touch and loved this detachment dearly. Woody will be greatly missed by all those who know him.
He is survived by his children, Ellen (Frank) Regalado, Emily Hughes, and William Victor (Teresa) Hughes; and his nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Woody is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Susan Jane (nee Bear) Hughes; and by his parents.
