Of Arlington Heights
March 2, 1921 - August 3, 2021
Eva Jakubowski was born to Elisabeth and Kurt Richter in Züllichau, Germany. In her childhood and teen years, Eva was very active and accomplished in school sports - swimming, rowing, and sailing spending her summers on the Oder River just south of town enjoying these activities and training for competitions. In the postwar years, she, her brother Hans, and her mother had found refuge in the town of Michelstadt, south of Frankfurt. There, she met Stanley Jakubowski, a young lieutenant in the Polish Cavalry, who was stationed there as part of the Allied occupation forces after he had been liberated by British forces in northern Germany in the closing days of the War. Stanley emigrated to Chicago in 1949, and Eva followed him in December 1951. They wed at Five Holy Martyrs Catholic Church in Brighton Park in late January 1952 and then lived in an apartment in a twelve-flat owned by Stanley’s uncle in Logan Square until they moved into their own brand new home on New England Avenue in April 1955, exactly ten years after the War ended. They moved next door to “Uncle” Lee and “Ciocia” (Aunt) Diane Kolar, and their parents became Grandpa and Grandma Kolar and Grandpa and Grandma Petri to Stanley and Eva’s children. And a year later through church, Eva met Agnes and Steve Paulius, also emigrants from Europe, and so they became Tante Agnes and Uncle Steve. They and their children, Laura Kolar and Diane, Dana, Lisa, and John Paulius, when they came along some years later, and their families, have been lifelong friends, as well as the Janulis and Egel families and so many others in all the years since.
Eva was predeceased by her husband Stanley and her brother Hans, and she is survived by her beloved children, George, Frank (Debbie Freeman), and Barbara (Michael Gorey), and their children, Michael (Lauren Thomas), Elizabeth (Michael Weaver), Daniel (Paige Matacchiera), and Katherine.
