Knew Frank very well in 60's while flying out of ORD he was a friend and a colleague with our then great Airline! He helped make the job a pleasure! My condolences to his family.

As a United pilot, I spent at least ten of my thirty years on reserve, i.e., on call, and in those pre-Internet days every trip started with a call from the crew desk. I couldn't even estimate how many times I've picked up the phone to hear, "Crew desk, Frank." He was one of the good guys.

I worked with Frank from 1968 at ORDCM through 1994 OPBCM and enjoyed working with him and going to many Blackhawks games with him. He will really be missed. My Prayers are with the Family............" Thanks Frank For Being A Good Friend and Coworker.

I would like to repeat the words of William Underwood in his praise and the effect Frank Smolek had on the people me dealt with as a Crew Scheduler; "Frank was not just a fine human being,he was kind considerate and thoughtful. He was one of those happy people that just brightened you day and made you see a place a bit differently and better than you were viewing."I have not spoken to Frank for more than twenty years, but I when I saw his obituary, I experienced a sense of loss like that of a good friend. My sincere sympathy to his wife and family.

For anyone who has spent any length of time on the Reserve List at United knows, while placed in a tough and often thankless job, Frank always kept the welfare of the pilots he handled in the forefront of his calls. He also provided a willing and always up to date scoreboard for any sport that was played in Chicago. A true gentleman who will be missed, but never forgotten.

Frank's posted picture says it all. Always greeted people with a smile and a kind word. He was thoughtful, a great co-worker & team member. I remember his co-workers enjoying Franks love of Jarosch bakery. He often brought goodies to share with everyone. Having recently transferred to Chicago from NY, Frank introduced me to his love of Chicago sports by inviting myself & daughter to Blackhawk games. We often think fondly of those evenings when the hockey season starts. I remember how proud he was when his son was selected for UAL pilot training. My sincere condolences to his family. He will be missed.
