

Shortly after immigrating to the United States at the age of sixteen, Gerda started working as a waitress along side her four sisters at Stouffer's Restaurant in Chicago.
Gerda was married to Siegfried W. Spiess; they later divorced. To the union five children were born. While married to Siegfried, Gerda became a Homemaker and raised her family.
Gerda enjoyed gardening, especially her flowers, vegetables, grape vines, and the fruit trees and berry bushes. From the harvests of her garden, she would make fresh salads, jellies and jams, juices, pickles and occasionally brandy. Gerda enjoyed hosting numerous parties with family and friends throughout the years.
Gerda is survived by her children: Robert Spiess, Diane Bouchee, Richard (Katherine) Spiess and Susanne Spiess; her grandchildren: Elizabeth, Erica, Ellyse and Ethan Spiess, Timothy Bouchee, Evan, Connor and Noelle Spiess, Robert and Joseph Romando; her sisters Kathe Spiess, Ilse Fiesel, and Evelinde (Henning) Windel; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her infant daughter, Linda Spiess; Siegfried Spiess; her sister Waltraud Koerner; brothers-in-law Rudy, Johann, Gustave (Helga), Fritz and Wilhelm Spiess, Bruno Fiesel, and Guenther Koerner; and sister-in-law Maria (Joseph)Asitsch.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Victory Centre of Vernon Hills, Thrive of Lake County, Advocate Condell Hospital and Advocate Hospice Team for the compassionate care of Gerda.
Gerda's Memorial is on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 North Arlington Heights Road (4 blocks south of Palatine Road) Arlington Heights, IL 60004. Visitation is from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm and Service is at 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gerda's name may be given to a charity of your choice.
In keeping with Gerda's wishes a private committal service will be held later.
