Gordon was born in Dubuque, Iowa on August 21, 1947, to parents Paul and Edith (nee Peal) McDowell. Following high school Gordon joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country. Following his service in the Navy, Gordon went to trade school and then became a mechanic.
Gordon married Erma Manso in 1992, and the couple was happily married until her death in 2002. Together they had two sons, Andrew and Adam.
Gordon kept busy and enjoyed tinkering and was the ultimate handyman. He loved to fix things up around the house and was always willing to help his neighbors with anything the needed. Gordon was immensely helpful and showed he cared with his actions.
Gordon is survived by his two sons, Andrew McDowell and Adam McDowell, and his brother, Arnie (Sandy) McDowell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma.
Cremation was private at Glueckert Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date in Iowa.
