Of Arlington Heights
Henry “Hank” Richard Frankel was born November 20, 1917, to Richard and Adele (nee Meyer) Frankel in Chicago, Illinois. He died peacefully at his home on May 29, 2017 after a series of strokes. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Virginia (Casey) Frankel.
Henry is survived by his children, Richard E. (Lynn) Frankel, Carol F. (James) Braband, and Joan F. (Frank) Cantrell; Poppy to his grandchildren, Brian (Nelse) Frankel, Dan (Libby) Braband, Keith (Patricia) Frankel, Lisa (John) Albrighton, Jeff (Angela) Frankel and Hope (Bryan) Klau; great-grandchildren, Jack, Tommy, Grace Albrighton, Grayson, Isla Klau, Ryan, Taylor, Nick, Rex, Pierce, Quinn, Casey and Gil Frankel.
Hank was a successful long-time banker with a 52-year career at The Northern Trust Bank in Chicago. At the bank he was known for his slogan, “Bank on Hank.” He was president of the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Banking and served a term as national president of that association. He taught banking classes and was the author of several books on bank operations.
His hobbies were family, fishing and friends. Living a full life of over 99 years, he seemingly had nine lives and used them to teach and inspire his three children, six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Among the qualities he passed on were loyalty, understanding, commitment and that family comes first. His grandchildren will always remember their college letters from Pop offering words of wisdom.
Hank was an avid Muskie fisherman who loved the great outdoors. Hank and Ginnie owned a cottage in Northern Wisconsin where they spent summers for over 50 years boating, fishing and sharing quality time with family and friends.
He was a life-long Cubs and Blackhawks fan. On his 90th birthday he had a brick dedicated at Wrigley Field that read “Ninety Years and Still Waiting.” He lived to see the Cubs win the World Series. Hank was a “one-of-a-kind” and will be missed by all.
Services and interment private.
